One square yard equals 9 square feet (3 ft × 3 ft = 9 sq ft). To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9.
Square Yards = Square Feet ÷ 9 | Square Feet = Square Yards × 9
Carpet and fabric are often sold by the square yard. A 270 sq ft living room = 270 ÷ 9 = 30 sq yd. Always add 10–15% waste when ordering carpet.
