Roof Square Footage Formula
Roof area is always larger than the footprint of the house because of the roof pitch (slope). Calculate roof square footage using the footprint area and a slope multiplier based on the roof pitch.
A 2,000 sq ft house footprint with a 6/12 pitch (6 inches rise per 12 inches run) has a slope multiplier of √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118. Roof area = 2,000 × 1.118 = 2,236 sq ft. Roofing shingles are sold in squares (1 square = 100 sq ft).

How to Calculate Roof Area
- Measure the footprint: Measure the outer perimeter of the house from the ground. Multiply length × width for a simple gable roof.
- Determine the pitch: Count the inches of rise per 12 inches of run (e.g., 6/12).
- Apply the slope multiplier: Multiply the footprint area by the multiplier for your pitch.
- Add 10–15% for waste: Valleys, hips, and cut edges waste material.
- Convert to squares: Divide by 100 to get the number of roofing squares needed.
Roofing Material Coverage
One square (100 sq ft) of shingles covers 100 sq ft of roof. Three-tab shingles come in bundles of 33.3 sq ft; you need 3 bundles per square. Architectural shingles may need 4 bundles per square depending on the brand.
